Week 2
The thing that really impressed me about this week's discussion was the discussion we had about family mapping. We discussed the three different boundaries that can exist in a family. First, ridged boundaries can be compared to a brick fence with barbed wire across the top. This kind of boundaries really put a strain on the family because there is generally a lack of communication and activity between family members that have a ridged boundary between then. Next, a diffused boundary can be represented by just fence posts. There is very little to nothing that is kept private. this form of a relationship can also put a strain on a relationship because some family members wish to keep things private and feel that other family members share or want to know too much. The third boundary is the clear boundary. This can be like a picket fence. It is clearly defined, but not so restricting that communication or visiting is impaired. This has helped me to understand my family a little better and I can see areas in which we are strong and areas in which we can improve. This will be helpful in the future.
